Hello friends and fellow scouts!!!
This is just a short how-to on how to make scouting work for you in 1.4. I'll admit, when it first came out, I considered dropping DUST entirely. I had invested 7+ mil SP into a suit that died instantly (literally with AA) with no respecs possible and no other appealing gamestyles in any case. But then something happened - I adapted. I started using strategies I hadn't thought of before and now feel as thoug I'm at a point where I can help my fellow scouts.
I should first say that scouting is more a mindset than it is a suit loadout - you could probably still do everything I'll talk about better in an assault suit, but that is besides this point. So first thing is first:
1. You're ultimate goal as a scout is survival. This sounds obvious but it is true - more so for scouts than for others. I have 87 shields and 167 armor. 4 or 5 good shots with an AR is all it takes to down me usually. With Aim Assist (even though they dampened its effect -- I actually think it's a positive addition to the game overall), 4 or 5 shots happens really quickly. surviving then, is mostly about NOT BEING SEEN, KILLING QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY AND USING COVER JUDICIOUSLY. If you're seen, you're dead 85% of the time. Sometimes someone is a bad shot and won't kill you but most people will.
2. Since it's best NOT to be seen, it's probably best to avoid areas of high activity. Avoid the center of maps where medium and heavy suits are duking it out with reckless abandon. You cannot afford to be reckless. Every time you hack an objective or an installation, you are basically putting your suit on the line - You're more vulnerable than others. Remember that. Thus, it is probably best never to engage head on with anybody. Kill stragglers and lone wolves - there are more of them than you think and they usually have tunnel vision.
3. Go to the objective on the far side of the map closest to the enemy MCC (but only if you think you're really good). This objective typically has the least traffic (the one[s] in the middle usually have high traffic) of enemies. Find a good hiding spot about 70-100m from the objective where you won't be seen. This is your HIDING SPOT. But you will also need a spawn point as well. Which brings me to another point - Drop Uplinks are ESSENTIAL. Not only will you soak up the WP, you can also try again should you fail in your assault. Drop the uplink somewhere hidden within a 60m radius of your hiding spot. Why? Because if your hiding spot is discovered you want to be able to respawn in the area so you don't want it to be destroyed- and you don't want your spawn point giving away your position in the first place. Scout the area before making a move - kill any stragglers or snipers around the perimeter - hack the CRU FIRST. Once you start to hack the objective your stealth is gone and you'll need back up - most people won't know they've lost the CRU - so stealth is maintained in this case and you can get backup before taking the objective.
4. SIT ON THE OBJECTIVE. A good scout should be able to hold an objective in a sparsely populated area by him or herself. If your scan radius is sufficient (I'm not entirely sure but I think mine is about 90+ m? I usually measure it by the distance from an objective I need to be before it shows up on my radar) you should be able to see your objective and your drop uplink. These are your pieces of bait. Any individual who tries to take out your uplink or tries to hack the objective becomes your prey and then its time to go hunting. Because you're on the side closest the enemy MCC you'll feast on a steady diet of lone wolves that think the objective is unprotected. Most will have a smaller scan radius than you and if you've picked your spot correctly they won't see you before you see them - then Assassination.
5. Kill quickly. If you find some bum trying to hack your objective, you should be quick enough @ 70 m to get to him before he finishes the hack - that's all the time you have between the time he starts the hack and the time he finishes it. It's typically enough time to run up to him and kill him with a shottie or nova knife. High damage weapons of this sort are the best for scouts period. If you're using an AR you're doing it wrong - there's NO reason to use a scout with an AR. None.
6. High Scan Precision is a must - Active Scanners are both life savers and the bane of our existence. After dropping your uplink and taking the objective you can use a supply depot to switch to another fit with an active scanner. Use it exorbitantly to ensure that you don't get snuck up on. But know that the "You have been scanned" will give the enemy an indication that something's fishy. Alternatively, as I prefer, you can simply rely on passive scanning and visual alertness. The worst thing that can happen is being found. If someone sneaks up on you respawn and reassess the situation - I use an advanced precision enhancer - I find it troubling that heavies can still sneak up on me, but in conjunction with situational awareness it is sufficient for now.
7. If a full squad comes for your objective RUN. If 2 or 3 come for the objective it depends on how ballsy you are. If they're pretty noobish and all performing the hack you can kill them all with your shottie. If there is a lookout take him out first - forget the hack initiially - only go back to it after taking out the look out.
8. Don't be tied down by your squad, if you have one, especially if it will compromise your stealth. Being around squdmates is nice sometimes for protection but it can also be detrimental to you if that person is a medium or a heavy who isn't concerned with stealth. If you're around this person, they're likely giving away your position and it is best to hide till that person/people perform the hack and leave or clear out enemy forces. - Squadding up is fine but just remember that you have a BIG target on your back called "easiest kill". |
